Union County High School was no match for Oakleaf, while Bradford hung to defeat IMG Academy on the final day of the Lake Area McDonald’s-Kiwanis Club of Starke boys’ basketball tournament on Dec. 20 at BHS.
Oakleaf outscored Union 19-7 in the second quarter and was never seriously threatened in defeating the Tigers 63-39 to claim third place and receive the consolation championship trophy.
Union (5-7) got 14 points from Daryl Watkins and seven from Dairon Alexander.
Alphonso Brown was limited to four points, but he was named to the Prep Zone All-Tournament Team after finishing with 39 points in three days.
In the tournament’s seventh-place game, Bradford got a total of 40 points from Oliver Griffin and Joquez Ivey and defeated IMG Academy 60-58.
Bradford led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter before IMG started coming back. Free throws were a weak point for the Tornadoes throughout the tournament, and though they struggled against IMG as well, Ivey and Trey Greenidge did combine to make four straight during the last minute of the game.
Ivey led Bradford with 21 points, while Griffin had 19.
Griffin was named to the all-tournament team. His 50-point total was behind only Gainesville’s Ike Smith, who was named the tournament MVP with 53 points.
Gainesville won the championship by defeating Creekside 62-51.
In the fifth-place game, Glynn Academy defeated Miami Northwestern 49-31.
Also making the all-tournament team were IMG Academy’s Brandon Vicinus (49 points), Oakleaf’s Kevin Thomas-Griffin (42 points) and Creekside’s Jameson Powell (37 points).
