Union basketball teams open district play with wins

The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams at Union County High School opened District 7-1A play with double-digit wins over visiting Dixie County on Dec. 4.
Keyambre Cobb scored 18 points to help lead the girls’ team to a 47-35 win.
Union outscored the Bears 9-5 in the second quarter to take a 10-point lead into the half. Two 3-pointers by Cobb early in the third quarter helped the Tigers build a 29-15 lead.
Qushawn Smith and Michelle Johnson had nine and eight, respectively. Ashley Johnson added seven points, while Lethia Johnson had five.
In the boys’ game, the Tigers put together a 22-2 run in the first quarter to take a 27-10 lead en route to taking an easy 64-29 win.
A rebound putback by Franklin Williams was the first of two consecutive baskets by Williams and the start of the big first-quarter run. The Tigers made three consecutive 3-pointers—one by Antonio Hendrieth and two by Emanuel Sykes—to go up 20-10. Daryl Watkins closed out the quarter with a 3-pointer, set up by a Parker Hodgson offensive rebound.
Hendrieth and Alphonso Brown each had 12 points, while Sykes had 10. Williams and Fred Sirmones each had nine, while Watkins had seven. Hodgson and Dakenundrick Wells had two and three, respectively.
Brown added team-high totals in rebounds (eight) and blocks (four), while Sykes led the team with five assists.
