Union County High School seniors Alphonso Brown and Kel Galloway participated in a scholarship-signing ceremony on May 14, with Brown accepting an offer to play basketball at Santa Fe College and Galloway accepting an offer to play football at Webber International University.
“Wow. This is one of the days I’ve always dreamed about,” Brown said. “To finally see it come true is really a blessing.”
Galloway said he was certainly happy when he made a visit to Webber and received an offer.
“I’ve always wanted to play college football,” he said.
Brown was officially listed as a center during his UCHS playing days, but the 6-6 player has the versatility to play any position, Union coach Rufus Jefferson said. Brown said he has his eyes on playing small forward.
Regardless of what position he plays, Jefferson believes Brown—the first UCHS boys’ basketball player to receive a scholarship in approximately 20 years—is in the best situation to start his college career.
“I think it’s just a perfect fit for him,” Jefferson said. “I’m very excited for him. I’m ready to see him do some big things at the next level.”
Galloway played multiple positions on the UCHS football team, including strong safety, corner, outside linebacker and wide receiver. Union coach Ronny Pruitt said he sees Galloway settling in on the defensive side of the ball at safety, but added that Galloway is the type of athlete who can contribute in a variety of ways.
“He may be one of those kids who can serve in two or three different roles,” Pruitt said. “I think they’re going to be surprised at what they’ve got.”
