Two Union County High School seniors signed letters of intent on National Signing Day in the school’s media center.

Daquin “Buddy” Edwards signed to play at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. He played fullback and on the defensive line in high school, but will be a fullback at Liberty.

“I’m speechless,” Edwards said. “It’s emotional, but at the same time, I’m just really, really excited. It’s a blessing. I couldn’t do it without people pushing me and the community pushing me.

“I’m just so thankful to have this day.”

Union County head coach Ronny Pruitt said Edwards has a work ethic and is blessed with the ability to play at the next level.

“He’s got the all-around package. God’s blessed him with the physical attributes to be successful at the next level. He’s taken advantage of it and done what he’s needed to do to make his dream come true.”

Edward’s teammate Phillip Lillie, will be attending Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C.

“It feels great to know what you’re doing after high school,” Lillie said. “It’s real awesome to know you’ve got a destination.”

Pruitt said Lillie has a wealth of options when it comes to playing at the next level. Lillie played defensive back, running back and wide receiver in high school and could very well fill different roles in college.

“He’s one of those I see going in at one position, but possibly coming out in another,” Pruitt said. “(Lenoir-Rhyne) realized that when they recruited him.”
