Dustin Hersey will become the first Union County High School graduate to play Division I baseball after signing a letter of intent Nov. 16 to play for Florida State University.

The 2013 UCHS graduate is currently a sophomore pitcher at St. Johns River State College. He received offers from such schools as Central Florida, North Florida and South Alabama before ultimately deciding on FSU.

“I got a really good scholarship and feel like it’s the best fit for me,” Hersey said.

At UCHS, Hersey helped lead the Tigers to the 2012 Class 1A state championship. He was named the Player of the Year in Class 1A that same season.

“He was a blue collar-type player,” Union head coach Brian Tomlinson said. “He always worked hard to get better and to make the team better. He always went the extra mile to help the team succeed.”
