Keystone Heights High School won the District 4-4A championship in football last year, but the team can’t rest on its laurels, losing 14 graduating seniors.

“It’s a pretty good spark,” wide receiver/defensive back Brighton Gibbs said of winning a district championship, “but we’ve lost a lot of seniors.”

Gibbs’ approach to this coming season, which officially began with the start of spring practice on May 1, is, “Let’s just get it started, boys (and) not think about last year, not think about the past. Just start off fresh and make things happen for us and make our own name.”

Head coach Chuck Dickinson said it was good to be on the field again following such a successful season, but he and his staff are doing a lot more individual teaching this spring than they did prior to last season.

“Last year, I felt going into the spring that I didn’t have to spend as much time on the teaching end of it, all the stuff that we do,” Dickinson said. “We’re trying to keep stuff simple this year. Right now, we’ve got kids who don’t understand the routes and things like that, but it’ll come. It’s something we’ve got to keep doing.”

Keystone will play a spring classic at St. Augustine’s Menendez High School on Friday, May 23, at 7 p.m.
