Putnam deputies: clerk employee stole $84,000

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said an employee of the clerk’s office stole $84,000 from the county by forging 18 checks.

Sharon Janene Blount, 42, was charged with one count each of official misconduct, operating an organized scheme to defraud and grand theft. She was also charged with 19 counts of uttering a false bank note.

The charges against Blount are not proven and she is presumed innocent until adjudicated guilty by a court.

According to the sheriff’s office, its detectives started an investigation after Putnam County Clerk Tim Smith discovered a large amount of money missing from an operating account.

Investigators determined that since June, Blount, a 15-year clerk’s office employee, fraudulently obtained and cashed 18 checks totaling $84,851.

Blount was taken into custody after detectives intercepted an $8,000 check she delivered to an individual in the parking lot of the Putnam County Courthouse.
