Now four dead from weekend shooting

Union County Sheriff Jerry Whitehead said that David Griffis, 44, died this morning at 7:39 a.m. while being treated at UF Health Shands Hospital for gunshot wounds to the stomach. He is the fourth victim to die from a weekend shooting spree by a co-worker that initially left three dead including the suspect, who then killed himself, in Union County on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 24.

Since the incident, LifeSouth Community Blood Center had set up in various locations in and around Lake Butler to receive blood donations for Griffis. LifeSouth Donor Recruiter Tony Hudson said that over 175 donors had donated blood to Griffis’ account. He added that Sunday was a scheduled blood drive, but that Monday’s and Tuesday’s blood drives at Spires IGA were due to an overwhelming amount of calls for them to come back out.

An online medical expense fund was set up at GiveForward for him and his family. Donations can be made at the website.
