The State Attorney’s Office in Green Cove Springs said Steven Leshawn McCloud, 38, was convicted this week on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and driving without a valid license.

According to a press release, in May 2012, Orange Park police tried to contact McCloud in the parking lot of the Orange Park Billiards. When an officer approached McCloud’s car, he attempted to run the officer over in the parking lot. McCloud then took off from the area and refused to pull over for police.

Weeks later, Clay County Sheriff’s Deputies were conducting a checkpoint in the area and spotted McCloud’s car. Deputies claimed the suspect was driving with a suspended license at the time and arrested McCloud at the scene.

According to the State Attorney’s office, McCloud is a habitual felony offender with convictions for felony drug possession, forgery, felony fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer and leaving the scene of an accident with injury. He faces 30 years in prison and will be sentenced Feb. 13.

Assistant State Attorney James Colaw prosecuted the case.
