Major Garry Seay sworn in as Interim Sheriff of Union County

Major Garry Seay was sworn in as Interim Sheriff of Union County through the middle of January 2014, following the sudden death of Sheriff Jerry Whitehead earlier in the day.

Major Garry Seay was sworn in as Interim Sheriff of Union County through the middle of January 2014, following the sudden death of Sheriff Jerry Whitehead earlier in the day.

As directed by Governor Rick Scott, Major Garry Seay was sworn in tonight by Union County Court Judge Bo Bayer at approximately 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18, as Interim Sheriff of Union County for a term beginning December 18, 2013, and ending January 17, 2014. This provides the governor with a full month to appoint a new sheriff for the coming year before the next regularly scheduled election.

Just two hours before, Seay and the Union County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference with the support of area sheriff’s who came in response to the sudden death of Sheriff Jerry Whitehead this afternoon at 2 p.m. Area news crews were on hand as well.

Whitehead was admitted on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, to North Florida Regional Medical Center after a brief illness and passed away from cardiac failure.
