Michael Carroll’s 4-yard touchdown run and J.J. Scholfield’s successful PAT with approximately seven minutes left in the game gave the Keystone Heights High School football team won the District 4-4A championship with a 21-20 win over visiting Bradford on Nov. 1.

It is the first district title for the Indians since 1997.

“Unbelievable,” said Keystone fullback/linebacker Darein Gilio, who sealed the win with an interception with 2:45 to play. “We worked all year—all through high school—just to have this moment right here. That’s what it’s about.”

As the district champ, Keystone (5-3, 4-0 in District 4) will host a first-round regional playoff game on Friday, Nov. 15, against Bolles.

“That’s a big plus for us, to be able to play in front of our fans,” Keystone head coach Chuck Dickinson said.

The Tornadoes, who will have to travel to Jacksonville to play Raines in a first-round regional playoff game, put together a 65-yard scoring drive to open the half. Jarvis DeSue, who finished with 98 yards on 20 carries, turned the corner along the sideline for a 20-yard touchdown to put Bradford up 20-14, but a low snap prevented Chris Barron from attempting the PAT. Barron instead scooped the ball up and unsuccessfully tried to run it into the end zone for two points.

Bradford (3-5, 3-1) would be held to 57 yards the rest of the half.

“The boys were very tough and played hard,” Bradford head coach Steve Reynolds said, “but you’ve got to commend Keystone for their hard work.”

Keystone running back Sam Anderson, who led all rushers with 130 yards on 16 carries, started the Indians’ game-winning drive with consecutive runs of 6 and 21 yards before leaving the game with an injury. Tight end Micah Brown caught a 9-yard pass on a fourth-and-2 play to set up first-and-goal at the 10, while a 6-yard run by Gilio set up Carroll’s 4-yard score.

Carroll finished the game with 32 yards on 10 carries, while quarterback Blake Valenzuela, who had a 43-yard touchdown run in the first half, gained 73 yards on 12 carries.

Valenzuela was 3-of-8 passing, completing all three attempts to Brown for 66 yards. One of those completions was good for a 49-yard touchdown that tied the score at 14-all with a minute left in the first half.

Bradford’s two first-half scores came on a 1-yard run by Tra’Von Thomas and a 29-yard fumble return by defensive lineman Greg Ruise.

Quarterback Jacob Luke completed 8-of-21 passes for 124 yards for Bradford, with Kenny Dinkins catching three passes for 54 yards and Keaaris Ardley catching three passes for 33 yards.

Bradford’s Jarvis DeSue turned this run into a 20-yard touchdown to put the Tornadoes up 20-14 in the third quarter.
