Licensed Zumba instructor Mary Westmoreland, April 22, previewed a new class she is offering at the Keystone Heights Senior Center. Beginning in May, Westmoreland will lead a Zumba toning class at the Commercial Drive facility.

Westmoreland said her regular Zumba class has nearly 20 participants and she will have to remove tables within the Senior Center to accommodate any additional participants.

“We are having a great time,” she said, “so if you are not doing it come down and join us.”

She added that seniors should not be scared off from Zumba after watching 20-somethings on television vigorously performing the Latin-based dance fitness routines. She said she adapts her Zumba moves to the more mature crowd.

“I can show you how to do high-octane,” she told the crowd of seniors gathered at the center. “I can also show you how to do a lesser movement and I can show you how to adapt to where you don’t have to hardly move at all.”

Westmoreland added that Zumba toning uses lighter weights than regular Zumba routines. She also said the toning moves are slower and have a lower impact on the knees.
