The State Attorney’s office said a Keystone Heights man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after admitting to sexually abusing two children.

Matthew Covey, 28, pleaded guilty Jan. 11 to seven counts of attempted capital sexual battery and two counts of lewd or lascivious molestation. Following the plea, Covey was also sentenced to a lifetime of sex offender probation.

Covey admitted to molesting a boy and girl under the age of 10. The abuse occurred between 2009 and 2010. Department of Children and Families investigators were alerted to the abuse when the little girl told her pediatrician and mother that Covey had inappropriately touched her.

“This guilty plea allows our young victims the chance to heal without facing their abuser in court,” said Assistant State Attorney James Colaw.

As part of the sentence, Covey was designated a sexual predator.
