Hundreds of Lake Region residents gathered at Keystone Beach before dawn March 30 for a sunrise service produced by the Kiwanis Club.

Kiwanis President Noel Thomas opened the service with a welcome.  After an opening prayer by Dr. Craig Moore of the Keystone United Methodist Church and the pledge to the flag led by Charles Van Zant of the Florida National Guard, Kathy Barrow of Lake Area Ministries spoke to the crowd.

Barrow told the gathering that the church-supported ministry fed 15,195 people in 2012.

“With the economy still  stretched, as tight as it is,” she said, “peoples’ budgets-particularly by the end of the month- they are there, they are needy, and we are so blessed to be able to provide for them.”

Barrow explained that the organization purchases two-thirds of its food from the Second Harvest food bank in Jacksonville.  LAM also picks up donated USDA products from Second Harvest. She added that the ministry purchases the remainder of its groceries locally.  She said Lake Region individuals and businesses also donate food to the charity.

Kiwanis club members took up an offering for the food bank and at the conclusion of the service Thomas announced that the crowd had given $1,545 to the charity.

Members of the Friendship Bible Church worship team sang throughout the service, and Friendship’s Tim Huggins provided the special music. Friendship Bible Church Pastor Paul Coleman delivered the services’ sermon.
