James, Griffis earn 2nd-, 5th-place finishes at state finals

Bradford High School’s Phillip James was the runner-up in the 199-pound class, while Union County’s Dustin Griffis placed fifth in the 238-pound class at the Florida High School Athletic Association Weightlifting Finals on April 20 in Kissimmee.

James had a bench press of 355 and a clean and jerk of 290 to finish with a 645 total—25 pounds behind champion Gage Takacs of Bradenton Southeast.

Griffis earned one of the last two medals in his class. He had a bench press of 385 and a clean and jerk of 255 to finish with a 640 total.

The top six in each class earned medals.

Bradford’s Markel Parks and Rashad Lane earned ninth- and 15th-place finishes, respectively, while Union’s Kevin Thornton placed 18th. Keystone’s Chase Musselman and John Brown earned ninth- and 13th-place finishes, respectively.
