Thanks to a good running game by Union County High School and some key mistakes by Hillard High School, the Tigers shut down the Flashes to a 41-0 game at the Tiger’s annual pre-season Kick-Off Classic.

Union County scored within the first two minutes of the game, marching it down the field against a Hillard defense that couldn’t stop the run. The Tigers scored 27 against them in the first quarter alone, but would only score twice again—once in the second and then not till the middle of the fourth.

It was a solid, lightning-quick performance by quarterback Caleb Cox to the Tigers’ triple-threat weapon: running backs Darian Robinson, Daquin Edwards and Isaiah Johnson. The Flashes didn’t know what hit them.

Head football coach Ronny Pruitt was predictably pleased.

“I liked the execution of the offense. Obviously we’re doing a few new things,” he said. “I liked what I saw there.

“Defensively, we’ve got more starters on the defensive side of the ball, but I liked what I saw out of the guys that were new.”

Austin Dukes, Geordyn Green, Alden McClellon and Garrett Williams made key tackles, frustrating Hillard’s offense that mostly ran into a brick wall with a few runs here and there on a night that started out soaking wet with a steady drizzle that finally fizzled out.

The Tigers’ shutout of the Flashes was helped by a couple of fumble recoveries and in spite of several penalties—most of them against Union County, including some personal fouls. But the Tigers had a couple of fumbles of their own. One rolled into the end zone for a touchback and another one was Cox’s own that he recovered.

Quarterback Casey Driggers also saw some action on the field, putting in a nice block near the end of the half after giving it to Robinson, who had a 20-yard run before the clock ran out. By then the Tigers were up by 34-0.

Quarterback Ty Cook got on the field for a few good plays as well.

The Tigers showed a strong running game, but Pruitt wants to see more passing, if the players will give it to him.

“We’ve got to work on our passing game. Caleb (Cox) is a taller kid, he’s got a great arm on him,” Pruitt said. “We plan on throwing the ball.

“Everybody’s kind of tagged us as we’re just gonna run it, run it, run it, but we do what we can do best. If we can throw it, we’re going to throw it.”

And he knows they need to throw it.

“There’s going to come a point in time,” he added, “where you’ve got to be able to put the ball in the air.”

It’s back to the practice field this week to prepare a young team that lost 23 players to graduation this past spring.

“We’ve got a lot of young kids in key positions,” Pruitt said, whose staff will see what they can get out of them.

After the game he set the stage for the new season: “It’s gonna be a marathon… Now it’s all for real. We’ve got to come out of the gate and never look back.

“You younger guys, you’ve got to learn to play.”

To all of them he told them what really counts: “Hey, I’m proud of you and I love ya.”
