Visiting Fleming Island hit big play after big play to build a 35-14 halftime lead and defeat the Bradford High School football team 35-23 in a spring classic on May 24.

The Eagles amassed 375 yards of offense in the first half, with quarterback Mike Scarnecchia completing 11 of 15 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns.

Four of the Golden Eagles’ scores covered distances of 36, 40, 60 and 62 yards.

“The reason we play the style of defense we play is to not allow big plays,” Bradford head coach Steven Reynolds said. “We didn’t do that very well.”

The offense had its struggles as well, especially early in the first half.

Reynolds said what it comes down to is both offensive and defensive units carrying out their assignments and making fundamental plays.

“The kids are giving effort,” Reynolds said. “We’ve just got to continue to discipline ourselves to make those plays when we have a chance.”

Bradford running back Tra’von Thomas rushed for 59 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, while quarterback Jacob Luke completed 8 of 17 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Kenny Dinkins caught six passes for 148 yards and a touchdown.

Thomas had the lone touchdown of the second half—a 14-yard run—with a botched Fleming Island giving the Tornadoes another two points on a safety.

The second half mainly consisted of both teams’ younger players.
