Clay Electric team places in Florida Lineman Competition

Clay Electric linemen brought home high marks and two trophies from the 13th annual Florida Linemen Competition, April 20 in Jacksonville.

The Orange Park District team consisting of Jared Baldree, Cody McLendon and Dustin Shepherd took home trophies for second place in the vertical hurtman rescue and third place in the crossarm change out.

“We are proud of our teams for demonstrating proficiency as well as safety at the lineman competition,” said General Manager Ricky Davis. “This event gives our linemen the opportunity to showcase their skills and network with other professionals in their field.”

Twenty-two teams and 31 apprentices from 11 utilities throughout Florida gathered in Jacksonville to recognize the profession of line work and demonstrate the safety, skill and endurance of electric linemen. While this was the 13th annual Florida Lineman Competition, this was only the second year Clay Electric has participated. The competition consisted of five timed events.

The competition, also known as a lineman rodeo, is organized by the Florida Municipal Electric Association and is open to employees of municipal, cooperative and investor-owned electric utilities.

During the event, competitors are judged on the application of safe work practices, proficiency and speed.

This year the Keystone Heights-based co-op entered three Journeyman teams. Employees representing Clay Electric on the journeymen teams were Matt Hickey (Keystone District), Mike Kenney (Operations) and Chris Altman (Palatka District); Damian Stewart, Michael Sutton and Roy Terrell (Orange Park District); and Jared Baldree, Cody McLendon and Dustin Shepherd (Orange Park District). Brandon Schumacher of the  Orange Park District represented the co-op as an apprentice.
