Clay deputy shoots OP man

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said an Orange Park man is in critical condition after a deputy shot him.

Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, Mary Justino, said that around 10 p.m. Thursday night, CCSO deputy Deputy Reginald Hyatt, 26, arrived at an apartment off Wells Road. The deputy was responding to a call that the male resident of the home was acting suicidal. According to Justino, Hyatt was met in an apartment breezeway by 26-year-old Nicholas R. Cannady, who was armed. When Cannady pointed his firearm at Hyatt, the deputy fired three shots, seriously injuring Cannady.

Justino wrote in a release that the deputy was not injured in the incident. Cannady’s wife, who placed the call that Hyatt was responding to, was also unhurt. Justino added that it is not known whether Cannady discharged his weapon. She said FDLE will investigate the shooting.
