Clay commission proclaims white cane safety day

Monitor Editor

The Clay County Commission urged area motorists to watch out for sight-handicapped pedestrians by proclaiming White Cane Safety Day during the panel’s Oct. 8 meeting.

Commissioner Doug Conkey read the proclamation.  He asked motorists to yield to sight-handicapped pedestrians at intersections which typically use white canes and are accompanied by guide dogs.

Daniel Harkins, representing the Clay Council for the Blind, told commissioners his organization now has 52 members and is looking for more. The group meets at 10 a.m. on the first Monday of each month at the Fleming Island Library.
