Clay academic team places 5th in state

Clay County’s academic team placed fifth in Division 2 of the  28th annual Commissioner’s Academic Challenge.  The competition  is  the official state championship for academic teams across Florida.  Thirty-nine of the state’s 67 school districts competed in the event.

Organizers of the challenge divided participating school districts into three divisions according to student populations.

Pinellas, Escambia, Seminole, Polk, Marion and Palm Beach counties placed first through sixth in Division 1, which consisted of 15 districts with over 40,000 students.

Martin, Okaloosa, St. Johns, Citrus, Clay and Indian River counties placed first through sixth in Division 2, which consisted of 12 districts with student enrollment between 9,000 and 40,000.

Suwannee, Hardee, Monroe, Walton, Franklin and Wakulla Counties placed first through sixth in Division 3 which consisted of 12 districts with under 9,000 students.

The Clay County team was selected after a qualifying test taken by juniors and seniors that competed on their respective high school teams.

Once chosen, the team practiced weekly before competing in the April 18-20 event, held at Walt Disney World.

Clay’s six-person team consisted of  Alex Elliott of Clay High School, Marc Cohen from  Ridgeview, Nico de Leon of Fleming Island, Charlene Xia of  Orange Park, Grant Schwab from  Ridgeview and Angelo Piner from Orange Park.

Ridgeview’s Susan McInarnay  and Ken Remsen of Orange Park coached the team.
