A bus driver and 18 students from Interlachen’s C.H. Price Middle School were transported to hospitals in Palatka and Gainesville after the school bus they were on overturned on S.R. 21 near Baden Powell Road Sept. 19.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, at around 2:40 p.m., a 2001 Toyota Tacoma driven by Irish Ann O’Sullivan, 37, of Hawthorne was parked on the side of the highway facing south as the northbound school bus approached. O’Sullivan attempted a left turn, driving into the path of the bus.

The driver of the 1999 Freightliner bus, Michael James Backlund, 31, of Hollister took evasive action and avoided colliding with the Tacoma.  However, the bus rolled over on its left side.

Of the 30 students on the bus, 11 were transported to Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka and 8 were taken to UF Health in Gainesville.  All injuries were minor.  Backlund received a broken nose, lacerations and abrasions.

O’Sullivan was cited for violation of right of way.
