Four Union County High School seniors signed letters of intent to play football at the collegiate level during a school assembly in the UCHS auditorium on April 12.

Wide receiver/tight end Dylan Clark and quarterback Chandler Mann will attend Campbellsville (Ky.) University and LaGrange (Ga.) College, respectively, while offensive lineman Jerry Keller and defensive back Walter Mabrey will both attend Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C.

Union head coach Ronny Pruitt said the four players are indicative of the type of kids he gets to work with in Union County. They may not necessarily be the best athletes when compared to others, but they more than make up for it with perseverance, Pruitt said, adding, “They have great attitudes. They have great work ethics. You can’t ask for more as a football coach.”

Mabrey said he worked hard to refocus his efforts in school and on the field over the course of the last three years and feels the private college is the place where he can continue to push himself to succeed.

“I’m used to being in a small place, so I want to go somewhere where I’ll be able to focus and learn and get a great education,” he said.

Keller, who will join Mabrey at Limestone, said it was almost hard to put into words what the opportunity means to him.

“It’s a great feeling to be given the opportunity to play something you love, to get more four more years of school and an education,” Keller said.

Clark started out as a quarterback, but in looking for a way to get onto the field and contribute, moved to wide receiver/tight end. He put in the effort necessary to learn a new position—a fact that won’t be lost on him when he steps onto the field for the first time at Campbellsville.

“It’s going to feel great,” Clark said. “It’s just going to feel like all the hard work I’ve done over the years has finally paid off.”

Mann, like Clark, feels the scholarship is an indication of the hard work he put forth on the field.

“Everything that I’ve been practicing for and dreaming about, it’s all coming together,” Mann said. “It’s a great feeling.”
