A Starke Police Capt. said his department has one person in custody after an early Sunday stabbing claimed the life of a person in back of the Magnolia Hotel.

Capt. Barry Warren said dispatchers sent officers to the parking area of the hotel, which is across Walnut Street from the post office just before 4 a.m.

He said when officers arrived they discovered the victim had already died.

Warren added that investigators have one person in custody and that the suspect has confessed to the stabbing. He also said the victim’s mother, a Union County resident has been notified of the death.

By 8 a.m., investigators from Starke police, FDLE and the medical examiner’s office were still processing the scene.

Warren said he did not know the names of the victim or suspect. He could not verify whether one or both were residents of the hotel, and he did not know what precipitated the attack. He added that he was on his way to the Bradford County Jail to collect more information and would issue a press release later Sunday.
